Kenya Semi-Arid Livestock Enhancement Support (K-SALES) was a three year (September 2013 to September 2016) Food for Progress initiative working in Meru, Tharaka Nithi, Kitui, Makueni, Taita Taveta, and Machakos Counties, as well as in Kenya’s Arid and Semi-Arid Lands, to improve the competitiveness of the livestock value chain, increase productivity and boost marketing and trade.

It was supported by United States Department of Agriculture through Land O’Lakes.

AGMARK implemented K-SALES activities in Taita Taveta County under a one year Fixed Obligation Sub Award from February 2015 to January 2016.

Goal

To improve the competitiveness of the cattle, sheep and goats meat value chains by increasing productivity and boost marketing and trade of live animals and meat (cattle and shoat), hides and skins and other associated livestock by-products.

Objective

To increase smallholder livestock productivity in the Taita Taveta County by building the capacity of various business services providers (such as Agrodealers, Agrovets, Animal Health Providers, hides and skin traders) in business management and technical knowledge on Livestock products.

Approach

1. Developed a training curriculum that was used to build the capacity of Business Service Providers (BSPs) in Taita Taveta county through structured trainings in business planning, financial management, marketing and after sale service and also address natural resource management
2. Enhanced the delivery of inputs and services that were packaged within the price of inputs
3. Facilitated market and business linkages that would sustainably enhance technical support to livestock enterprises in Taita Taveta County
