Smallholder Crop insurance project “Kilimo Salama” was funded by
Syngenta Foundation For Sustainable Agriculture (SFSA) and implemented in partnership with AGMARK, UAP, MEA Ltd, Syngenta East Africa Ltd, Safaricom Ltd and Kenya Meteorological Department.
It was implemented in Kenya; Bungoma-Busia, Oyugis-Homa Bay, Nanyuki-Timau, Embu and Eldoret from November 2010—May 2012.
The mandate of SFSA was to improve the livelihoods of poor rural communities through sustainable agriculture by promoting innovative methods and technologies that help farmers increasing their food production, getting better access to markets, and mitigating risks.

Objective
To explore and develop the potential of micro insurance for smallholders. Kilimo Salama (“Safe Agriculture”), was an insurance product designed to mitigate the effects of drought and excess rain for smallholder maize and Wheat farmers.
